Et la Lumière Fut

Other things the French seem to transport d'appart à appart are light fixtures (les luminaires), even the ones that hang from the ceilings (les plafonds).  Madame had hung light bulbs (les ampoules) des plafonds for the sake of convenience, but that was not exactly what I had in mind.  Oh well! (Eh bien!)


I simply considered this to be another decorating decision that I would have to make, so I set off to the neighborhood lighting store (la boutique à léclairage du quartier) to find (chercher) a floor lamp (un lampadaire) and three ceiling fixtures (trois plafonniers), one each for the entryway (l'entrée), la cuisine, et la salle de bain.  Le placard pour les médicaments dans la salle de bain had its own lighting system, and I had already bought two small lamps (et j'avais déjà acheté deux petites lampes) pour les deux chevets dans la chambre à coucher.


J'ai trouvé un lampadaire immédiatement, mais les trois plafonniers were a little harder to decide on.  After an hour went by, I finally chose the most basic (les plus fondamentales) of plafonniers.  Le livraison would be (serait) le mardi suivant.


Mardi matin:  Le livreur arrived (est arrivé) avec les luminaires.  He installed (Il a installé les plafonniers dans la salle à coucher et la cuisine and made sure that le lampadaire was working properly.  However, (cependant) when he went to installer le plafonnier dans la salle de bain, he exclaimed, "Alas! Madame! This will not be sufficient light for you to apply your make-up!"  ("Hélas! Madame!  Ce n'est pas suffisant pour appliquer votre maquillage!")   Only the French!  (Seulement les français!)


Mais la lumière fut, et c'était bon.
